Plus, we look back at the W Gold Cup and the trajectory of the USWNT.

The USA Soccercast is back with Episode 128, as we discuss the release of the new U.S. Soccer jerseys for 2024.

The USMNT, USWNT, and the youth and extended national teams will all wear the new look, and of course it has people talking. We discuss the jerseys and how they look, focusing on the need for U.S. Soccer to develop a jersey identity ahead of the 2026 World Cup (and you KNOW which one is preferred).

After the break, we recap the USWNT’s win at the Concacaf W Gold Cup to become the inaugural champions. Still, some questions are left about the team’s play, their roster construction, and how it changes as we approach this summer’s Olympics. The USWNT will have to further reduce the squad from 23 players to 18, and that’s with so many players who didn’t make the W Gold Cup roster or are returning from lengthy injury absences. Emma Hayes will have her work cut out for her, and time is not a luxury that she will possess. We discuss some of the things the USWNT need to figure out moving forward.

They are injury replacements for Luca de la Torre and Josh Sargeant.

The United States Men’s National Team had to make a couple of substitutions before the team meets up in Dallas this week. Today, U.S. Soccer announced that Brenden Aaronson and Haji Wright will be added to the USMNT Concacaf Nations League Finals roster as injury replacements for Luca de la Torre and Josh Sargeant.

Both players were on the 2022 FIFA World Cup roster, each appearing in all 4 matches for the USMNT at the tournament. Haji Wright scoring a goal in the Round of 16 loss to the Netherlands. Wright has scored 13 goals for Coventry City this season across all competitions, including a game-winner against Wolverhampton Wanderers yesterday in the FA Cup quarterfinals. Aaronson also scored yesterday in a match against Werder Bremen.

Because the roster had already been listed, only the numbers of the departing players were available to the injury replacements. It worked out for the most part, with Aaronson taking the #11 he normally wears and Wright taking #14. Both will be added as forwards, but create some versatility for USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter in the absence of de la Torre and Sargeant. Aaronson can play as an attacking midfielder or even a winger, while Wright can operate at the 9 and on the wing. Berhalter hopes each can add to a strong roster that will hopefully lift the Concacaf Nations League trophy for the 3rd straight time.

The current 23-player USMNT roster:

GOALKEEPERS (3): 22-Drake Callender (Inter Miami), 18-Ethan Horvath (Cardiff City), 1-Matt Turner (Nottingham Forest)

A look at where you can find most of the roster this weekend.

Of the 23 call-ups on the USMNT roster for the Nations League Finals next week, most are ready to take on the weekend with their clubs. There are a few exceptions - Kristopher Lund in Serie B, and Chris Richards and Tyler Adams with a weekend off - but it’s a busy weekend with a great representation of matches to watch the bulk of this month’s roster in action before they head for the international break. We’ll start with Saturday morning’s action:

Saturday

Union Berlin v Werder Bremen - 10:30a on ESPN+

It’s been a rough season for Brendan Aaronson, who saw 20 minutes off the bench last weekend as Union Berlin fell to Stuttgart. Aaronson has received just five starts and a little over 600 minutes for an underperforming Union Berlin side, and he’s now been left off the upcoming March roster as well. Aaronson has work to do yet this season and there will be decisions to make in June when Aaronson is scheduled to return to Leeds after the end of his loan.

Wolfsburg v Augsburg - 10:30a on ESPN+

Kevin Paredes was also left off the March 23-man roster, but was included in the strong U-23 roster that was brought in for Olympics preparation. Paredes got his 7th straight start for Wolfsburg last weekend in their 2-0 loss to league-leading Leverkusen.

Heidenheim v Borussia Mönchengladbach - 10:30a on ESPN+

Lennard Maloney remains out, but Jordan Pefok has five goals and three assists for Union Berlin in the Bundesliga this season, including three goals since the January restart. However, Pefok was left off the upcoming March roster and will need to continue to impress in Germany if he’s to break through before Copa America. Joe Scally was included in the USMNT roster for March and seems likely to get a start against Jamaica with Sergiño Dest serving a suspension.

Luton Town v Nottingham Forest - 11a on USA Network

Matt Turner and Gio Reyna are both struggling to find time at relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest, but both have also been called into the March camp and it seems likely they will play a significant role with the national team. Forest face a relegation scrap with Luton Town this weekend, a team they are ahead of by just three points in the race for safety.

Fulham FC v Tottenham Hotspur - 1:30p on USA Network

Tim Ream has been on the bench for Fulham’s past three matches, but Antonee Robinson continues to start and play nearly every minute for his side. The team fell 2-1 to Wolverhampton last weekend and now sit in 12th place. Both players were called in for the upcoming camp.

Hoffenheim v Stuttgart - 1:30p on ESPN+

John Brooks picked up a goal in the sixth minute last weekend to give his team the early lead but then was shown straight red 16 minutes later and had to watch from the showers as Hoffenheim fell to Eintracht Frankfurt 3-1. Brooks will now serve a suspension for the next three weeks.

Seattle Sounders v Colorado Rapids - 3:30p on Fox

There will be a heavy mix of former USMNT players on the field in Seattle on Saturday afternoon as Jordan Morris and Cristian Roldan face Zach Steffen, Sam Vines, and Djordje Mihailovic. Colorado are coming off a 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake, while Seattle’s game last weekend against Philadelphia was postponed due to weather.

Free MLS on Apple TV:

All MLS matches are free on Apple TV this weekend, catch your local flavor or your favorite USMNT fringe players.

Sunday

Juventus v Genoa - 7:30a on CBSSN and Paramount+

Weston McKennie picked up two more assists last weekend in Juventus’s 2-2 draw with Atalanta, which gives him four assists in his last two matches played for his club team. McKennie has nine assists in all competitions for Juve, though he is still looking for his first goal scored on the season. Tim Weah came off the bench yet again and saw just seven minutes. Both players have been called up for the Nations League matches and will play significant roles for the national team in March and moving into the Copa America this summer.

Sevilla v Celta Vigo - 9a on ESPN Deportes and ESPN+

Luca de la Torre started and went the full 90 in Celta Vigo’s 4-0 loss to Real Madrid last weekend. Celta had kept it to a one goal game for most of the match until the 79th minute when they gave up a first own goal, followed by a second own goal in the 88th and the icing on the cake in the 4th minute of stoppage time. The last goal was mercifully scored by Real Madrid. So, what we’re saying is that Celta Vigo players actually scored as many goals as Real Madrid’s team!

Monaco v Lorient - 10a on beIN Sports

Folarin Balogun started and played the full match last weekend as Monaco defeated Strasbourg 1-0. Monaco are undefeated in their past three and sit in third place. Their opponent this weekend is 15th place Lorient, who are tied with Nantes for the relegation playoff position.

Hellas Verona v AC Milan - 10a on Paramount+

Christian Pulisic scored the winning goal against Empoli last weekend and picked up another goal and an assist against Slavia Prague midweek in Europa League as Milan cruised to a 7-3 aggregate victory to advance to the quarterfinals. Pulisic now has 11 goals and 8 assists across all competitions for his club team this season. Yunus Musah hasn’t started a league match for Milan since early December, but did play the full 90 against Slavia Prague on Thursday. Milan are now in second place and facing a Hellas Verona side that is in 14th place but only two points ahead of 18th place Frosinone for relegation in a very crowded bottom third of the Serie A table which has seven teams within three points of relegation.

Borussia Dortmund v Eintracht Frankfurt - 12:30p on ESPN+

Timothy Chandler saw four minutes off the bench last weekend in Eintracht Frankfurt’s 3-1 win over ten man Hoffenheim. It was Chandler’s second appearance in three matches as well as his second appearance of the season. Frankfurt are seven points behind this weekend’s opponent, Borussia Dortmund, for fourth place and the final Champions League position.

Rayo Vallecano v Real Betis - 1:30p on ESPN Deportes and ESPN+

Johnny Cardoso came off the bench last weekend, his first substitute appearance since joining the starting lineup in January, as Real Betis fell to Villarreal 3-2. Betis are now in seventh place and face 16th place Rayo Vallecano, who are looking for their first La Liga win since January 2nd.

PSV Eindhoven v Twente - 3p on ESPN+

The PSV trio of Sergiño Dest, Malik Tillman, and Ricardo Pepi have all been called into the March Nations League camp, but first they will look to continue their undefeated Eredivisie campaign as they take on third place Twente, who have won three straight matches. PSV are coming in off a loss and exit from the Champions League Round of 16 and will now focus their full attention on closing out the Eredivisie title.

Atlanta United v Orlando City - 7p on FS1

Neither Atlanta nor Orlando City had a player selected for the Nations League roster, but each had a player selected for the 22-player U-23 roster as Caleb Wiley from Atlanta and Duncan McGuire of Orlando City will both look to cement an opportunity to represent the United States in Paris this Summer.

They won the W Gold Cup, but a loss was big one.

The United States Women’s National Team were recently crowned the W Gold Cup champions, but that title saw some moments that affected them in other areas. Today, FIFA released their latest women’s world rankings, and the USWNT dropped 2 spots to #4. It’s the worst ranking the USWNT have had since the rankings began in 2003.

The USWNT were #1 in the world entering the Women’s World Cup, but dropped to 3rd due to their Round of 16 finish, their worst in Women’s World Cup history. They then were able to claw their way up a spot by December, finishing 2023 as the #2 team in the world.

The USWNT were the clear favorites to win the inaugural W Gold Cup, but a group stage loss to Mexico is likely what caused them to drop in the rankings.

Spain remains the #1 team in the world, but the rest of the Top 10 had some shakeups. The top 10, in order: Spain, England, France, USA, Germany, Sweden, Japan, Netherlands, Canada, and Brazil.

Within Concacaf, outside of the USWNT and Canada in the top 10, Mexico is the highest ranked team. They rose 4 spots to #31. Puerto Rico was one of the highest risers in the entire world, rising 18 spots to 85th based on their performance at the W Gold Cup. Puerto Rico were literally drawn out of the group stage after they went to a drawing of lots against Costa Rica for the right to be the final team in the quarterfinals. Costa Rica’s name was drawn, sending Puerto Rico home.

The next matches for the USWNT will be in the SheBelieves Cup in April. They will face #7 Japan in the semifinals and then will have a match against either #9 Canada or #10 Brazil. In June, they will face #20 South Korea in two matches in Colorado and Minnesota.

More preparation for the Olympics.

The USMNT U-23s will convene in Europe next week ahead of two March friendlies to continue their preparation for the Olympics this summer, and a strong roster will participate in those matches. Today, U.S. Soccer announced the 22-player roster that will face Guinea on March 22nd and France on March 25th.

The roster includes loads of experience, with 15 players with USMNT caps, led by Gianluca Busio with 13. Eight of the players were on the January Camp roster for the match against Slovenia. Players born on or after Jan. 1, 2001, are age-eligible for the 2024 Olympics this summer in Paris. Each of these players are age-eligible for the Olympic roster, with forward Esmir Bajraktarevic also age-eligible for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

We’re 7 days from the Nations League semifinal. Who do YOU think should start?

It’s almost time for the Nations League semifinal. The USMNT will face Jamaica on Thursday, March 21 at AT&T Stadium (“Jerry World”) in Arlington, TX. The winner will advance to the Nations League final against either Mexico or Panama on Sunday, March 24.

Now, the question is: who should be in the starting lineup? Let’s take a poll to see what the community thinks!

During a virtual press conference yesterday to discuss the Nations League roster, USMNT manager Gregg Berhalter provided lots of feedback behind some of the decisions he made with the roster. One insight was that Tyler Adams is available to play in 45-minute increments. Berhalter said of Adams’ callup, “[this] decision was basically the [result] of months of communication with his club.”

He also discussed Gio Reyna’s inclusion despite struggling to find time on the field at Nottingham Forest. “For us, he’s performed well in this last year, basically. We thought that was enough,” Berhalter said in response to Reyna’s production at Forest compared to that on the USMNT.

Finally, one of the biggest omissions from the roster was Union Berlin’s Brenden Aaronson, who has struggled this season on the club level but has been a mainstay on the USMNT for the past couple years. Berhalter remarked on how the decision to leave him off the roster, along with all the other players omitted, was incredibly hard to do. “This was probably the most difficult squad we’ve had to pick. We think there’s guys ahead of him right now.” Berhalter also mentioned that there will be opportunities for players not on the roster to get back to the USMNT in later windows.

The forward is scoring for Chelsea.

With the United States Women’s National Team in a transition period, there is an opportunity for new players to make their way into the squad. However, one past name who made an initial breakthrough but experienced a career setback could also enjoy a return to the fold. After an almost two-year absence due to a devastating injury, Catarina Cantanhede Melônio Macario made her debut for Chelsea and has resumed scoring at a prolific rate. With a few more finishes, the highly productive 24-year-old attacker — once considered the next great hope — could perhaps enjoy international football sooner rather than later.

Born in São Luís in the Brazilian state of Maranhão, Macario played with Flamengo, Cruzeiro, and Santos before moving to the United States at the age of 12, with her parents determining that the country would be “the ideal place for [her] development.” Settling in San Diego, she competed with the powerful San Diego Surf youth club and Torrey Pines High School, earning All-CIF First Team honors after scoring 34 goals as a freshman. Overcoming an anterior cruciate ligament her sophomore year (which enabled her to “dig more deeply into school” in preparation for future academic rigor), the attacker broke the Elite Clubs National League career goal-scoring record with 165 finishes while also thrice being named an NSCAA All-American.

Macario then matriculated to Stanford University, enjoying an incredible first season while leading the nation in assists with 16, scoring 17 goals, winning the Pac-12 and College Cup, and being named ESPNW Player of the Year, Pac-12 Forward of the Year, Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, and a first-team All-American. As a sophomore, she contributed 14 goals and eight assists as the Cardinal won another conference title, once again earning ESPNW Player of the Year, first-team All-American selection, and Pac-12 Forward of the Year but also claiming the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy. In her third and final collegiate season, the “technical and intelligent” attacker switched to midfielder and registered an astonishing 32 goals and 23 assists in 25 matches to secure another conference-and-national-title double while repeating her previous individual accolades.

“So many goals that she’s scored, I just shake my head,” said Stanford head coach Paul Ratcliffe. “[She’s] the best creative player I’ve seen in a long time. Everyone gets better when you play with Catarina, and that’s probably the greatest compliment you can have as a player, that you make everyone around you better. It’s very rare that you get the complete player, and she is the complete player.”

Eschewing a potential final two years of eligibility and opting out of the National Women’s Soccer League draft, Macario joined French powerhouse Lyon on a two-and-a-half season contract, with former president Jean-Michel Aulas describing her acquisition as “the most significant operation in the history” of the club. In her first season, she contributed six goals in 11 appearances. The following year included 22 goals in 33 league and cup matches, helping lead Les Fenottes to the Champions League title, including the eventual match-winning finish in the 3-1 victory over defending champion Barcelona in the final. However, a devastating ACL injury on the last matchday derailed her progress, resulting in a surgery and a long injury layoff that would have compelled many players to consider a future away from the game.

She continued to prepare to return to the field, making her debut for the Blues on March 3rd, a full 641 days since her previous action. True to past form, the attacker scored a goal in a 4-0 victory over Leicester City, helping secure three points in the midst of a heated title race. Her second goal followed shortly after, claiming a 1-0 win over Everton in the semifinal round of the Women’s FA Cup.

Despite two brief substitute appearances, optimism is at a high. “We’ve had to do a lot of work with her off the pitch so for her to get this moment I’m so immensely proud of her and the team behind the team who have put the hours into her,” said Chelsea and future USWNT manager Emma Hayes. “She’s a super footballer and just what we need coming into the run-in... She’s a great human and I knew bringing her to Chelsea we would have to go backwards before we went forward. I can tell the Chelsea fans this: I’m leaving you a super player. I hope she plays a big part for the remainder of the season but long-term Chelsea have got a world-class forward and so have USA.”
