I called it! I totally called it! Chile beat Argentina in the final on penalties, just like last year, and I totally called it!

Wait, what? USA v. Colombia? Oh, I suppose that is a game that happened. But I mean, jeez, can't a guy get a moment to gloat? Here's who saw their stock go up in Saturday's 3rd place match.

Stock Up

Bobby Wood

Wood missed out on the semifinal, and on Saturday, he showed why he was dearly missed. Wood didn't have a perfect game — his passing in particular let him down at times — but his hold up play was threatening and he had some of the best chances on the night for the USMNT. His selection by you, our readers, as the man of the match was deserved.

Christian Pulisic

Once again, Pulisic came on and showed no intimidation in the face of strong adversity. When he entered the match, he brought on a much-needed spark to the offense. It wasn't enough to get the job done, but it certainly is an encouraging sign from such a young player. These few minutes in the Copa America need to be translated to more playing time in future matches.

Stock Down

Michael Orozco

John Brooks and Fabian Johnson were a bit beaten up from all the work they faced throughout the tournament, so Klinsmann gave them a rest. To cover for them, Matt Besler and Michael Orozco stepped into the line up. Orozco, in particular, had a poor night. The goal came from his side of the pitch, and he was regularly overrun by Cuadrado. On top of that, his bad reaction at the close of the game earned him a sending off. Orozco already isn't the most loved player on the USMNT, and this performance did nothing to change that.

Brad Guzan

I don't want to be Brad Guzan right now. After a rough and humiliating season with Aston Villa, Guzan came into the Copa America with something to prove. For most of the tournament, he did fine. And then he screwed up bad against Argentina. Apparently, Klinsmann thought that was enough to drop him for the aging Tim Howard. Howard had a decent game. He wasn't really at fault for the goal and his distribution was a welcome improvement. Soccer is a cruel sport and the only question anyone really asks is "What have you done for me lately?" Well, the last thing Guzan did was get dropped after getting hammered.

Edgar Castillo

When DeAndre Yedlin was suspended against Ecuador, Klinsmann chose to compensate by pushing Fabian Johnson to right back and playing Matt Besler at left back instead of Castillo. And now, with Fabian Johnson rested, Castillo still couldn't step into the line up, this time with Besler slotting in at center back and Orozco at fullback. And Orozco was expected to not do well. Castillo already wasn't in Klinsmann's plans at fullback, only making the roster after Timothy Chandler's injury. But third choice at the actual tournament? That has to hurt.

It was their second loss to the No. 3 ranked team in the world in this tournament. In each match the U.S. held their own but were unable to find the back of the net.

There were several good individual performances in the loss. After calculating your post-match ratings, we have a clear winner.

Man of the Match: Bobby Wood

Bobby Wood received the best rating from the community with Tim Howard coming a close second. Wood came the closest to scoring on the night. He saw an open shot bang off the post mid-way through the second half. He also had a few other good chances after finding space in the box. Unfortunately he was unable to capitalize and the Colombian's lone goal stood up.

The United States put in a better performance Saturday night, but couldn't quite match Colombia.

The United States men's national team finished 4th at Copa America Centenario, losing a close 1-0 decision Saturday night vs. Colombia in the Third Place Match in Glendale, Arizona. Despite the loss, the U.S. turned in a much stronger performance than four days prior vs. Argentina. Here's what we learned:

The team cared much more about the result than we did

Okay, I'll speak for myself here. Maybe *you* were excited about the prospect of a third place medal. I guess it would've been a cool souvenir for the guys to bring home from summer camp. It's nice to have something to literally show for your efforts. But for the rest of us, it's hard to get up for a Third Place Match after your team has just been eliminated.

Of course, Jurgen Klinsmann and his squad are professionals, and they cared about this result very much. Both teams, in fact, fielded first choice lineups. There was a greater intensity than we typically see in this sort of match. It was undoubtedly a far more spirited and entertaining game than any of Saturday's three Euro 2016 matches. Both teams pressured and attacked, and generally tried to score, which is more than you could say about the games across the pond.

Still, many observers had preferred to see some youth worked into the squad for this one. A competitive match against a Top 5 team would've been a great learning experience for Darlington Nagbe, Christian Pulisic, Perry Kitchen, or even Ethan Horvath to be trusted with a start here. This feels like an opportunity missed ahead of World Cup Qualifying resuming this fall, and that's disappointing.

The Klinsmann-Orozco Bromance lives on

Everyone needs a buddy they can rely on in a pinch. When you need help moving a couch, when you need a ride to the airport, it's good to have someone you know will answer the phone. That's who Michael Orozco is to Jurgen Klinsmann.

Some coaches just have favorites. Michael Orozco is a versatile player. He can, when needed, slot anywhere across the back line. He's never the first choice at any of those positions, yet always seems to be in the mix because he's both willing and able, and on occasion does a capable job.

With two starters down due to injury (Brooks & Johnson), Klinsmann had holes to fill. Unsurprisingly, Matt Besler earned another start. And despite the presence of actual left back Edgar Castillo, it was Orozco who got the nod on the left. Why? Because why not.

Orozco was most assuredly the worst player on the field for the U.S. Saturday night. He had all sorts of trouble with Juan Cuadrado, consistently left acres of space, and topped it off with a retaliatory straight red card in stoppage time. You might think we've seen the last of Michael Orozco for a while, if not forever. But you'd be wrong. Klinsy's got him on speed dial, he'll call again, and Orozco will show up. And we'll have this discussion all over again.

Maybe Lionel Messi just scared the living crap out of us

Could it be this simple? The United States wasn't great on Saturday night vs. Colombia, but the performance was eons better than it was vs. Argentina. Granted, just about anything would've been better than what we saw in the Semifinals. Last Tuesday we saw a team that looked flat out intimidated from the opening whistle. I suppose facing the world's best player could do that do a team. Maybe the stage was too big.

It was a different story vs. Colombia. We saw consistent ball pressure. There were periods of sustained possession, coherent passing, quality chances created, even a few shots on target. The return to the XI of Jones, Wood, and Bedoya certainly was a big part of this, restoring a front six that played so well together earlier in the tournament. But the U.S. looked like a team that believed it could win. Colombia isn't as good Argentina, but they're still a damned good team.

This game was, in fact, winnable. If Clint Dempsey's spectacular free kick attempt wasn't saved, or if Bobby Wood's effort doesn't hit the post, maybe we're talking about a different result. Maybe it goes to penalties and we have a few minutes to celebrate. Ah, what could've been.

Fourth place at Copa America is a very respectable showing that was above expectation. When Klinsmann declared a few weeks ago that reaching the Semifinals was the goal, it was widely viewed as unrealistic. But the U.S. managed to win its group and beat a very good Ecuador team in a knockout game. The world's elite teams are still a good measure beyond us. We knew that, but it's been reinforced.

The USMNT needed a string of good results after a really rough twelve months. There are changes to be made, new players to integrate. But this team's confidence has been restored heading into some important World Cup Qualifiers this fall. It's not all sunshine and rainbows, but it'll have to do.

Re-live the magic.

The United States men's national team fell to Colombia in the third place match of the Copa America Centenario. They finished in fourth place. (That's what happens when you lose the third place match.)

That makes two losses in two matches against Colombia, although that's to be expected because they're a very highly-rated team.

Here are the highlights via Fox Soccer's YouTube page:

Carlos Bacca scored the match's lone goal in the 31st minute, which was assisted by Santiago Arias and James Rodriguez.

Michael Orozco was sent off in the 93rd minute with a red card. Santiago Arias was also sent to the locker room early with his second yellow.

Not a bad effort this tournament by the U.S. national team. Ultimately they finished with a 3-3 record, but they advanced further than most people thought they would. Jurgen Klinsmann was derided before the tournament, he was derided during the tournament, and he'll be derided after the tournament. For now, we can give him credit for accomplishing the self-imposed goal of reaching the semifinals. He may still be let go, although I doubt it.

Next for the U.S. is World Cup Qualifying matches in September. They have some work to do before qualifying for the dreaded HEX(!!!), so the matches will require a top group of call ups.

Lineups

USMNT: Tim Howard, DeAndre Yedlin, Geoff Cameron, Matt Besler, Michael Orozco, Gyasi Zardes, Michael Bradley, Jermaine Jones, Alejandro Bedoya, Bobby Wood, Clint Dempsey

A bitter end to an otherwise successful tournament for Jurgen Klinsmann and his men.

Other than the scoreline it was a pretty even match with the U.S. creating their fair share of chances but just unable to finish in front of goal. Even with two consistent back line members on the shelf with injury, the U.S. only managed to concede once, while they were still unable to beat David Ospina in the Colombia goal for the second time this tournament.

Fourth place...

The United States men's national team lost to Colombia, 1-0, in the third-place match of the Copa America Centenario at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The loss wraps up a 9-match summer that saw the USMNT go 6-3.

Colombia enjoyed most of the early play until the 15th minute when the U.S. worked a beautfiul move to create the first great chance of the match. Jermaine Jones slotted in a throughball to the left flank for Alejandro Bedoya to center. His ball found the oncoming Clint Dempsey at the top of the six-yard box, but his shot would be blocked away for a corner kick.

The U.S. fell behind, 1-0, at the hour-mark thanks to a lovely Colombian move. James Rodriguez dinked a ball over the top for Santiago Arias to head across the face of goal and Carlos Bacca to tap into an empty net.

Wood and Dempsey both saw a few good opportunities in front of goal slip away before the halftime whistle blew with the one-goal deficit still intact.

Dempsey again had a good chance to get the U.S. on the board five minutes into the second half, but his curling free kick from 30 yards out was kept out by a fantastic save by David Ospina. It was almost a carbon copy of the sequence from the opening match of the tournament.

At the hour mark, Juan Cuadrado came inches away from scoring one of the goals of the tournament. His long range chip from the right flank floated over a helpless Tim Howard but clanked off the crossbar. In the resulting U.S. attack, Bobby Wood returned the favor by smashing an open shot off the post.

The U.S. had another great chance to equalize in the 83rd minute as Yedlin found acres of space on the right, cut a pass back to the top of the box, but Wood whiffed on a shot.

That would be the last real chance as Colombia killed off the match well to finish third at the Copa America. A tough way to end the tournament for the USA.

Thoughts

The U.S. came out of the gate a lot more confident than they did against Argentina. Bobby Wood got their first shot attempt just seven minutes in. Topping the 90-minute total from the semifinal.

Colombia enjoyed more time in the danger areas of the field in the first half. Dominating in the corner kick department 5-2.

The brilliance of James Rodriguez helped unlock the U.S. back line with ease on the goal. Both center backs were caught out and Yedlin was beaten by Bacca into the empty space for the goal.

Clint Dempsey and Bobby Wood picked up right where they left off. They combined for several good moves. Their chemistry together looks very promising.

The U.S. enjoyed a lot of good chances in the second half but just couldn't put the ball in the net.

It wasn't a poor performance nor was it particularly a good one. Colombia finished their chance and the U.S. didn't. Simple as that.

Michael Orozco's red card was pure idiocy.

A poor way to end the tournament.

What's next?

The U.S. squad separates and either goes back to their club or begins their summer vacation. FIFA have eliminated the August window for matches on their calendar, which means we won't see the USMNT against until World Cup qualifying resumes on September 2. The U.S. will travel to St. Vincent and the Grenadines for their penultimate match of CONCACAF's fourth round of qualifying.

Third is better than fourth. Probably.

Today is the day! It's for all the consolation marbles! It's the United States vs. Colombia in the Copa America Centenario third-place match. Most predictors gave the U.S. absolutely no chance to get this far, but here they are with a chance to finish third in the 16-team tournament. Will finishing in third make up for the embarrassment that was the Argentina match? Maybe slightly.

Jurgen Klinsmann has made several changes to the lineup. John Brooks and Fabian Johnson are out with injuries. Michael Orozco and Matt Besler come in to take their place along the back four. Jermaine Jones, Alejandro Bedoya, and Bobby Wood all return from suspension to take their normal starting spots back.

3 Lineup Thoughts

It's basically the same lineup as the first Colombia match except a weaker back line.

No Nagbe, No Happy.

Will this be Tim Howard's last match for the USMNT? If it is, hopefully it's a positive one.

The United States and Colombia meet for the second time in the Copa America Centenario to decide who finishes in third-place.

The United States finally wrap up their busy summer tonight against Colombia in the Copa America Centenario third-place match. This will be the Americans' ninth match of the summer. They've gone 6-2 so far. Finishing it off with a revenge victory over Colombia would be a rather satisfying ending. However, another loss and the bitter taste from the Argentina match could last all the way until September.

When these two countries met to kick off this tournament it was Colombia who prevailed, but it wasn't a dominant performance by any means. The U.S. had their chances, but couldn't convert. Both sides have gone through a lot since that opening match, it'll be very interesting to see how they stack up the second time around.

This will be the last chance to watch the USMNT in action until World Cup qualifying resumes in September as Jurgen Klinsmann confirmed earlier this week that no friendlies between now and then are planned. Here's to hoping they can end it on a good note.

The match will kick off at 8:00 p.m. ET and will be televised in English on FX and in Spanish on Univision. JP Dellecamara and Landon Donovan will be on the call.
