Gonzalez dominated the midfield for Monterrey throughout the fall playoffs, leading Monterrey to the Apertura final, where they lost to Jose Francisco Torres’ Tigres UANL. The 18-year-old has emerged as one of Liga MX’s finest young stars in his debut season for Los Rayados. He had 21 regular season appearances and 4 Copa MX appearances for the club so far, and is a mainstay in the starting XI.
The next year may see Jonathan Gonzalez in the middle of a power struggle between Mexico and the USMNT. Both want him to play for their national teams and so far, the USMNT is in the lead. Gonzalez has turned down every call up Mexico has given him, and he has competed for the United States at the U-17, U-18 and U-20 levels. Most recently, he was on the U-20 team for the 2017 CONCACAF U-20 Championship.
The future is indeed bright for Jonathan Gonzalez, and hopefully we will see him competing for the USMNT when their annual January Camp convenes. For now, Gonzalez is taking Liga MX by storm, and it’s incredibly exciting to watch.
