Another United States youth international is heading to the Bundesliga. USMNT U-20 midfielder Alex Mendez announced recently that he had signed a contract with SC Freiburg. The 18-year-old will join the team after the CONCACAF U-20 Championship.
Mendez was a member of the LA Galaxy academy, and appeared six times this season for LA Galaxy II in USL. Operating mainly as a center attack midfielder, he had one goal and added 3 assists for Los Dos. He has also appeared for the USMNT U-17s and U-20s, tallying a goal and an assist for the U-17s and 2 assists for the U-20s. He will have a chance to show what he can do for the U-20s during the upcoming CONCACAF U-20 Championship, which serves as a qualification tournament for the 2019 U-20 World Cup.
Alex Mendez will join fellow American Caleb Stanko at Freiburg, and he will hope to make inroads at a club that sits 11th in the Bundesliga. While it is expected that he will begin his Freiburg career with either the U-19s or SC Freiburg II, he will hope that increased playing opportunities will give him the experience he will need to move up to the first team.
Happy to announce that I have signed my first contract with @scfreiburg. I want to give a big thank you to my family, coaches, friends, and teammates that have helped and supported me throughout this process. It’s only the beginning ♂️ pic.twitter.com/JhG3hVarLh

More and more Americans are making the move to Germany to further their soccer careers. Alex Mendez will hopefully be another example of American success in the Bundesliga. Keep an eye on him.
