It’s been a long time coming for Bobby Wood. The 25-year-old striker hadn’t scored yet this season and hadn’t scored a goal from the run of play in the Bundesliga since August of 2017 with Hamburger SV (he did score a penalty this past spring).
That ended today as Wood would open the scoring for Hannover with a beautiful header towards the far post in the 30th minute.

Wood wasn’t done either. Just before halftime he was on the sheet again with a second header, this much simpler than the first to put Hannover up 2-0.
Stuttgart then pulled a goal back in the 50th minute. Wood would be subbed off in the 76th minute with Stuttgart pushing for an equalizer. Hannover would get a third in stoppage time to clinch the crucial three points. The win is Hannover’s first of the season and pulls them out of the Bundesliga basement.
For Wood, his very recent uptick in form (an assist in midweek and a brace today) is a welcome sign heading into the international window where the United States will take on Colombia and Peru. Hopefully he is starting to regain the form that he had two years ago.
