Haji Wright has scored his first career Bundesliga goal in Schalke 04’s midweek match with Bayer Leverkusen. The goal came off a corner and was assisted by fellow American Weston McKennie, who headed the ball towards goal before Wright slotted it home.

Haji Wright scores his first career Bundesliga goal, on an assist by Weston McKennie no less! @s04_us pic.twitter.com/glizfWMe0z
Wright has been a bit of a surprise this season for American fans as the 20-year-old striker has been overlooked for other prospective options in the player pool (see: Sargent, Joshua). However, Wright got his second start of the season and has made the most of it by scoring a goal in the dying seconds of the first half. Schalke had conceded twice previously so the score brought them within one at the half.
Schalke have really struggled to generate offense this season and have suffered a number of injuries as well. Wright was subbed off minutes into the second half but if he’s able to make the most of his opportunities and continue to score opportunistic goals he should be able to continue to come by playing time as well.
One of Wright and McKennie’s American teammates has noticed their connection as well:
Take your chance!!! Congrats bro @HajiWright nice assist @WMckennie
