A 17-year-old fresh off the U-17 World Cup impressed so much in winter camp with Borussia Dortmund that he has been promoted to the first team. Stop me if you’ve heard this story before. The similarities between what Christian Pulisic did in the 2016-2017 season and what Giovani Reyna is doing now are astounding. Both were present for unimpressive group stage showings at the U-17 World Cup and both had been at Dortmund the same amount of time.

Today in his press conference ahead of Saturday’s clash with FC Augsburg, Borussia Dortmund head coach Lucien Favre said that Gio Reyna will definitely be in the squad. Sporting Director Michael Zorc said:

Reyna has spent the first half of the season with Dortmund’s U-19s, producing 8 goals and 8 assists in 1,381 minutes in all competitions. The 17-year-old son of former United States Men’s National Team captain Claudio Reyna is set to make his debut, and it could very well happen on Saturday against a team that Dortmund should beat easily in Augsburg. Wake up early and tune into Fox Sports 1 on Saturday to potentially see one of the fine American talents make his debut for one of the best teams in Germany (9:30 AM ET). Even if it doesn’t happen then, it appears to only be a matter of time.
