We have an American in the score column this week in the Bundesliga! In the 53rd minute of Schalke 04’s match against Fortuna Düsseldorf, Weston McKennie scored a wonderful header off a Bastian Oczipka free kick.
Oczipka’s free kick from about 30 yards out on the left sailed into the middle of the box, where Weston McKennie was waiting to pounce. He did a powerful diving header to shoot the ball into the back of the net.
WESTON. MCKENNIE.

It’s McKennie’s second goal of the season. He last scored on March 7th against Hoffenheim. McKennie had played much of the past two matches in central defense for Schalke, who suffered defeats of 4-0 to Borussia Dortmund and 3-0 to Augsburg. Today, he’s been in a central midfield role, allowing him to press up more on offense. He has looked more comfortable and his pressing forward has resulted in a goal for the 21-year-old United States Men’s National Team midfielder.
His header gave Schalke the lead after a scoreless first half, but Düsseldorf has since taken the lead off 2 goals in 5 minutes.
