Giovanni Reyna is so good, he’s scoring off free kicks now! In the 50th minute of Borussia Dortmund’s DFB-Pokal first round match against Duisburg, with the Black and Yellow up 3-0, Dortmund earned a free kick and they gave the opportunity to Gio Reyna. The 17-year-old American took that ball and sent a low shot into the back of the net.

Sure, the free kick took a deflection off teammate Axel Witsel before it banged into the goal, but we really don’t care. And, more importantly, neither did the statistician. Reyna was credited with the goal to give Dortmund a 4-0 lead. They would eventually go on to win 5-0 in an easy match for the German giants.

Gio Reyna started the match as the lone attacking midfielder, and he was involved in play throughout the match. He was a huge part of the buildup that led to Dortmund’s second goal, and the team clearly has a lot of confidence in him if he’s now taking free kicks.
Gregg Berhalter has said that at the first opportunity he has, Gio Reyna will be called into the United States Men’s National Team. He was set to have that call-up in March for matches against the Netherlands and Wales, but the coronavirus pandemic forced those matches to be canceled. It’s unclear if the USMNT will resume play in 2020, but we know that whenever we see the team next, Reyna will be there. And, we can’t wait to see what he brings to the table.
