Yanks Abroad: Boyd’s brace, Hoppe’s Heroics

Terrence Boyd got his 17th & 18th goals of the season, and Matthew Hoppe was vital to much more than his own team this weekend.

Not only did Matthew Hoppe help give Schalke a rare win, but Eintracht Frankfurt’s loss helped ensure both John Brooks of Wolfsburg & Gio Reyna of Borussia Dortmund will be playing in the UCL next year. The 20-year-old assisted the third & scored the fourth as Schalke got the 4-3 win.

With just one match remaining in the season, this single victory amazingly increased Schalke’s point total by 23%.

The goal was very well taken, with strong “my team’s been relegated so I can do whatever I want right now,” vibes. His run starts at :39 in the video below.

In Germany’s 3rd tier, Terrence Boyd scored back-to-back goals in four minutes as Hallescher FC demolished Wehen Wiesbaden 4-0. The brace brings the 30-year-old’s total to 18 goals on the season, second in the league, with one match remaining.

Both of his goals were quite impressive. A show of strength & determination in the box, followed by a powerful header. Some of the goals Boyd scores in this league make it seem like he could score five goals every single game if he felt like doing so.

Galatasaray didn’t take the Turkish Super Lig title from Besiktas, but a win over Yeni Malataspor was enough for 2nd place & a spot in the UEFA Champions League. DeAndre Yedlin played the first 45 minutes of that 3-1 final. John Brooks and Wolfsburg also secured a place in the UCL, even after losing a two-goal lead to settle for a 2-2 draw at RB Leipzig on Sunday. Christian Cappis and Hobro IK got an important draw as well. Their scoreless final at Kolding IF in the relegation playoffs keeps them in Denmark’s top flight next season.

Timothy Weah didn’t feature this weekend but his team is one match from the Ligue 1 title. With just a one point lead over Paris Saint-Germain, Lille take on Angers this Sunday. They’ll likely need to get all three points, as PSG play 16th place Brest.
