USMNT midweek viewing guide: Copas and European friendlies

Away from the Gold Cup, a few Americans will be in action for their clubs.

While most of our focus is on the USMNT’s action in the Gold Cup, there is a smattering of club action, including friendlies, Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, USL Championship, Argentine cup matches, and Champions League qualifying.

Let’s get into it! Here’s a snapshot of USMNT players in action:

Tuesday

  • FC Prishtina v Ferencvaros, 2p: Henry Wingo started for Ferencvaros in the first leg of this Champions League qualifying matchup. His club scored 3 goals in minutes 70-80, and carry that 3-goal margin into the second leg.

Also in action:

  • FC Giessen v Borussia Dortmund, 12:30p: Gio Reyna could feature for Dortmund in this friendly, plus keep an eye out for German-American Dortmund II defender Lennard Maloney.
  • Hibernian v Arsenal FC, 1p on fuboTV: Folarin Balogun could play for Arsenal in their friendly against Hibs.
  • Preston North End v St. Johnstone, 2p: Matt Olosunde recently joined Preston from Rotherham, and could see action for Preston in this friendly.

Wednesday

  • Kairat Almaty v Maccabi Haifa, 10a: Josh Cohen will likely start in net for Haifa, with the Champions League qualifying matchup even at 1-1 after the first leg.
  • San Telmo v Banfield, 2:35p on Fanatiz, fuboTV: Joel Soñora recently joined Banfield, and could feature in this round of 16 cup tie.
  • Velez Sarsfield v Barcelona SC, 6:15p on beIN Sports, Fanatiz, fuboTV: Michael Hoyos plays on the wing for “the other Barcelona”, from Ecuador. They have a Copa Libertadores round of 16 match.
  • Louisville City v OKC Energy, 7:30p on ESPN+: 17-year-old Mexican-American left back Jonathan Gomez has 2 goals and 2 assists in Louisville’s last 5 games, and recently trained with the full Mexican national team. He figures to sign in Europe as soon as he’s eligible, which might not be until January 2022.

Also in action:

  • Wolfsburg v Holstein Kiel, 6a: Kobe Hernandez-Foster started a friendly for Wolfsburg last week; Bryang Kayo could also see action in this one.
  • KRC Genk v AZ Alkmaar, 10a: Mark McKenzie could play for Genk in this friendly.
  • LOSC Lille v KAA Gent, 11a: Tim Weah could play for Lille in this friendly.
  • Würzburger v Greuther Fürth, 11a: Julian Green could play for Fürth in this friendly.
  • PSV Eindhoven v PAOK Thessaloniki, 2p: Richie Ledezma is still recovering from his injury and will miss this friendly.
  • River Plate v Argentinos Juniors, 8:30p on Fanatiz, fuboTV: Matko Miljevic has been widely rumored to leave Argentinos this summer, but he’s still on the books for now as they play in the Copa Libertadores round of 16.

Thursday

  • Santos v Independiente, 6:15p on beIN Sports, Fanatiz, fuboTV: Alan Soñora and Independiente are in action with the Copa Sudamericana round of 16.
  • Olimpia v Internacional, 8:30p on Fanatiz, fuboTV: Johnny Cardoso has played in Internacional’s last six, including three full 90’s. They face Olimpia in the Copa Libertadores round of 16.

Also in action:

  • Marseille v Servette, 6a: Konrad could feature in this friendly for his new club, Marseille.
  • Heracles Almelo v SV Rödinghausen: Luca de la Torre gets one step closer to the regular season kickoff with Heracles.
