USMNT announces jersey numbers for friendly vs. Czech Republic.

The newbies got their numbers, including Jordan Morris grabbing the No. 9.

US Soccer

Jersey numbers are pretty unimportant. They don't always correlate to where a player will play and under Jurgen Klinsmann, they definitely don't carry weight or meaning. He started off his tenure by taking away the players' numbers and giving them whatever number the player who played his position normally wore as a way of saying that seniority was overrated.

So why do we care what numbers player wear?

Because we do. There is no good reason -- unless you're trying to figure out what number to put on the back of your replica jersey -- but we do.

So with the United States set to play the Czech Republic on Wednesday and a slew of new players, figuring out which players were going to wear which numbers was always going to be interesting. Meaningful, no, but interesting, definitely.

Jordan Morris, the first collegian to get a U.S. call-up since 1999, was handed the No. 9 shirt and Emerson Hyndman got the No. 8. So two of the brighter prospects for position correlating numbers. Greg Garca got the No. 3, which os common for a fullback too, as did winger Joe Gyau and the No. 7.

So we learned nothing, but gaze upon them anyway.
