The United States are in Cuba for a friendly today. On a normal day against any other opponent in any other country, it would be just a boring old exhibition match that no one will remember in a month’s time. But this one is different. Maybe not for the on-the-field story as much as the off-the-field ramifications and political significance.
This will the first time since 1947 that the U.S. has traveled to Cuba for a match on their own terms. The two did play a World Cup qualifier in Havana in 2008.
Today’s match is more about symbolism and two countries attempted to mend fences than it is about actual results, but nevertheless, a match will be played and a result will go in the official record book for each team. On paper, the USMNT should be able to handle Cuba with ease, much like they’ve done in the aforementioned World Cup qualifier and in the 2015 Gold Cup.
Jurgen Klinsmann has brought a very strong roster down for this match. Anything but a comprehensive victory would be disappointing in this one.
