Here we are. It’s 2018 and the United States men’s national team are set to return to the field to conclude their annual January training camp. It’s a year that was supposed to be about excitement and passion, but has devolved into nothing but barrenness after a humiliating World Cup qualifying display.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is the opening opponent this year for the MLS-based, experimental USMNT squad picked for this camp. Many of the names and faces you’ll see in this match may not even be a factor in a year’s time when a permanent manager is appointed, but these camps are always crucial to giving players a chance to prove themselves.
Whether it’s fringe players who didn’t get much of a chance last cycle (C.J. Sapong, Bill Hamid, Ike Opara) or youngsters looking to prove they’re first team material (Tyler Adams, Brooks Lennon, Zack Steffen), there’s plenty to focus on for this match and this year in general. It’s not a situation that any supporter of the U.S. had envisioned six months ago, but it’s the reality we live in. It’s time to see what the future holds.
