The United States men’s national team and an interesting mix of players take on Colombia in the first of two October friendlies tonight in Tampa, FL. Without several top young prospects available to be called up, interim head coach Dave Sarachan has decided to introduce a few veterans back into the fold.
Most controversial of the names on the roster is obviously Michael Bradley. Exactly a year and a day after that fateful night in Couva, the former (still current?) captain is set for his return against Los Cafeteros.
Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams are all missing due to injury. This will give other players a chance to show that they either belong on the team or deserve a bigger role.
Four uncapped players have been brought in and are looking for their debuts. Most exciting of the quartet has to be 20-year-old winger Jonathan Amon who is having a great season with FC Nordsjælland in Denmark. He’s a tricky winger with tons of pace, something the U.S. sorely lacks on the wings. Other possible debutants include Ben Sweat, Aaron Long and Reggie Cannon.
Colombia have fallen to 14th in the latest FIFA World Rankings have being consistently Top 5-10 over the past few years. They’re still supremely talented and bringing a strong roster to face the USMNT. It should be a difficult match.
