It looks like a Klinsmann is returning to the United States Men’s National Team. No, not that one. According to several reports, Jonathan Klinsmann has been made an emergency call up to the USMNT camp in Europe for friendlies this Thursday against England at Wembley Stadium and next Tuesday against Italy in Genk, Belgium.
According to the Washington Post’s Steven Goff, Zack Steffen is dealing with a hamstring issue, and with Brad Guzan not appearing in camp until Wednesday, Club Brugge keeper Ethan Horvath is the only keeper in camp. With Steffen not expected to be available for the England match, Klinsmann is a Euro-based reinforcement to the goalkeeping core.
Update: U.S. Soccer makes it official, as Zack Steffen and Darlington Nagbe both withdraw from USMNT camp. Both are suffering from hamstring issues, which forced the change.
Klinsmann, the 21-year-old son of former USMNT head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, has featured the entire year as the starting goalkeeper for Hertha Berlin II, which plays in the 4th tier Regionalliga Nordost in Germany. He did make one appearance for the senior team in last year’s Europa League, starting in a 1-1 draw against Östersund in group play. He has played well enough to be the backup for the senior team in a league match against Bayern Munich and a DFB-Pokal second round match against SV Darmstadt 98.
ROSTER UPDATE: @darlingtonnagbe & @zackstef_23 withdraw due to injuries, and GK Jonathan Klinsmann will join the squad for upcoming friendlies.
