The United States Men’s National Team, as of now, are set to head to Europe later this month for friendlies against the Netherlands and Wales. With the everchanging landscape of playing sports during the coronavirus outbreak, it’s unclear whether these matches will proceed as scheduled. For now, USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter will have some decisions to make when he names his roster sometime next week.
With the coronavirus outbreak putting a halt on some domestic leagues and discouragin travel for others, coupled with injuries, the options for Berhalter have dwindled a bit. The U-23s will be in the middle of Olympic qualifying during the March window, and that roster contains a number of players who have made appearances for the USMNT recently. Finally, there are some new faces, like wonderkid Gio Reyna, that will likely make their USMNT debut this month.
So, who will Berhalter name to the roster for friendlies against the Dutch and Welsh? Here’s a predicted roster:
Goalkeepers (3): Brad Guzan (Atlanta United), Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Sean Johnson (New York City FC)
Defenders (9): John Brooks (Wolfsburg), Cameron Carter-Vickers (Luton Town), Sergiño Dest (Ajax), Aaron Long (New York Red Bulls), Matt Miazga (Reading FC), Tim Ream (Fulham), Nick Lima (San Jose Earthquakes), DeAndre Yedlin (Newcastle), Walker Zimmerman (Nashville SC)
Midfielders (7): Tyler Adams (RB Leipzig), Christian Cappis (Hobro), Sebastian Lletget (LA Galaxy), Weston McKennie (Schalke 04), Alfredo Morales (Fortuna Düsseldorf), Cristian Roldan (Seattle Sounders), Wil Trapp (Inter Miami CF)
Forwards (6): Jozy Altidore (Toronto FC), Tyler Boyd (Besiktas), Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders), Josh Sargent (Werder Bremen), Gio Reyna (Borussia Dortmund), Gyasi Zardes (Columbus Crew SC)
At goalkeeper, with Zack Steffen injured, Brad Guzan or Sean Johnson is your likely starter, with Bill Hamid serving as the 3rd string. On defense, several call-ups are unavailable, so Cameron Carter-Vickers could be the beneficiary of the extra spot.
In the middle, Christian Cappis has played well lately for Hobro and could make the roster, while Tyler Adams makes his return to the national team after missing the latter half of 2019 due to injury. Up front, the aforementioned Reyna will likely make his debut against the Netherlands, and we will likely see the return of Jozy Altidore to the team.
