The United States Men’s National Team will open up 2024 back in Texas. Today, U.S. Soccer announced that the USMNT will host their January Camp in San Antonio, where they will play Slovenia in a friendly on January 20th at Toyota Field. Kickoff is set for 3:00pm ET and will be broadcast on TNT, Telemundo, Universo, Max, and Peacock.

It will be the first time the USMNT have played at the 8,300-seat home of San Antonio FC, and it’s the first time they have played in San Antonio since April 2015. Then, Jordan Morris and Juan Agudelo helped the USMNT beat Mexico 2-0 at the Alamodome. This time, U.S. Soccer opted for a USL Championship stadium to welcome Slovenia. It will be just the 3rd time in the last 15 years that they have gone to the stadium of a lower division team. They visited Chattanooga in 2017 for January Camp and Cary, North Carolina for a match in March 2018.

As it normally does, the January Camp will fall outside of a FIFA international window, so clubs will not be required to release players for this match. However, with the Concacaf Nations League Finals coming in March and Copa América and the Olympics in the summer, head coach Gregg Berhalter and U.S. Soccer will use the opportunity to bring in some players for evaluation ahead of those tournaments.

“This is an opportunity for us to identify and work with the next generation of players who have the potential to make an impact on our program,” Berhalter said in a statement. “With the World Cup coming to the United States in 2026, we have placed a huge priority on getting as many players as possible experience in important competitions. Between the Olympics, Concacaf Nations League and Copa America, the chances are there for players to make a statement, and for many of them the game in San Antonio can be an important first step.”

The USMNT have faced Slovenia just twice previously. Once was an epic match in the group stage of the 2010 World Cup, a 2-2 draw that should have been a win in American fans’ eyes. The second was a 3-2 victory on the road for the USMNT in November 2011. They will hope to continue their winning ways on January 20th.
