A quick update of some notable performances this weekend from our Yanks Abroad:
John Anthony Brooks
The 24 year old went the full 90 for Hertha Berlin in an exciting 1-1 draw with the German giants Bayern Munich. Brooks made his physical presence known and really played fantastic on the way to securing the result. He proved up to the task as he dealt with Müller and Lewandowski all match. And it wasn’t just on defense either, the big guy even got his head on some set pieces at the other end as well. Hertha Berlin almost stole all three points from the Bundesliga leaders but Lewandowski snuck home a corner kick with the last touch of the game in the 96’ minute. However it is great to see Brooks putting in such a great performance against a big time opponent.
Fabian Johnson
Partially because of Brooks’ performance discussed above, Johnson’s Borussia Mönchengladbach was facing a very hungry RB Leipzig. The draw the day before allowed second place Leipzig to cut Bayern’s lead to just five points on Sunday. Fabian was pretty quiet all match only connecting with 59% of his passes. It wasn’t his best day and he got replaced in the 80’ minute in favor of attacking reinforcements. Gladbach got one goal back but they lost by a final of 2-1.
Paul Arriola
It was Arriola’s 100th appearance for Club Tijuana yesterday.
Congrats to little bro @PaulArriola on 100 apps for @Xolos ! Great honor bud. Keep it going! Well deserved. ⚫️

He was pretty dangerous for most of the match but he was called for a (fairly weak) penalty in the 79’ minute. It brought Pumas within a goal and just three minutes later the Xolos let in an own goal and the matched ended in a draw.
Brad Guzan
It was FA Cup action this weekend in England and Guzan went 90 minutes for Middlesbrough in a 3-2 win over third tier Oxford United. He was beaten with a free kick that made it over the wall for the first goal. The second goal came just one minute later. Guzan made the first save but it bounced to an Oxford man who tapped it into an open net. The result held however, and Middlesbrough are through to the Quarterfinal.
Bobby Wood
Held out of the Hamburg lineup because of a thigh injury... But it is not serious.
DeAndre Yedlin
It was another quality 90 minutes from Yedlin today in the EFL Championship as Newcastle United defeated Aston Villa 2-0. He did his job both sides of the ball yet again today. He passed the ball very well and, as always, caused problems with his speed. But Yedlin actually played some lock down defense for the most part and helped his back line earn the shut out. Nothing all that special from the 23 year old but he continues to show he’s one of - if not THE - best outside back playing in the second tier of England.
