It’s rare that you see a young American get so much praise and recognition at 16-17 years old and still somehow surpass expectations. That’s exactly what Christian Pulisic has done in his short career. Conversations about the 18-year-old already being the most important USMNT player ever don’t seem far-fetched. But, Pulisic admitted at a media event in New York on Tuesday that he has plenty to work with his game.
"I just try to do the best I can for myself and the people around me. I think I have a lot of things to improve on, from just growing physically and being stronger to continue to improve on doing what I do best, going at defenders, finding new ways to attack defenses and help my team on the offensive side.” — Christian Pulisic; Source: Soccer America
The Dortmund forward’s success and talent is undeniable. Anyone who watches him play comes away impressed both by his skill level and maturity for a young player. While he’s playing huge roles for both club and country, Pulisic concedes that the last year-plus has been a whirlwind.
"For me, everything happened a little bit too fast. The past year has been a roller coaster. Being able to play at a club level at a high level, and then getting called into the national team, it's amazing. But I'm just trying to stay as leveled-grounded as I can. I am honored that I am here to represent club and country."
There will be no time for growing pains this season as he’ll be expected to provide an attacking spark for the USMNT as they look to clinch a spot in next summer’s World Cup. He’ll also be thrust into a featured role for his club side as Ousmane Dembele has departed the club. It’s guaranteed to be a hectic next 10 months for the youngster. If how he’s handled the pressure thus far is any indication, he should be just fine.
