Community Corner: Which USMNT unit needs the most improvement?

The national team has needs in each area...but which group is the one that needs to improve the most?

Soccer: International Friendly Soccer-Mexico at USA Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to this week’s Community Corner, where we discuss different issues and ask for the all-important takes. This week, we take a look at the United States Men’s National Team and its various units. Now that the team has a new coach in Gregg Berhalter, the evaluation process will soon begin to identify the players that he would like to utilize according to the tactics and playing style he likes to employ. The team is a young one, with several players looking to form Berhalter’s core that he can take into the Gold Cup, CONCACAF Nations League and World Cup qualifying when it begins in 2020.

When you look at the different units of the team—goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, and forwards—each of them have their positive areas and things they need to improve on. They each have some good players and players that fans may never want to see suit up for the national team again. But, which team needs the most improvement? Is it the goalkeepers, a unit that traditionally has been the best for the USMNT and the most respected group around the world? Is it a defense that has had a rough couple of years as they seek to find the group that works best together? Is it the midfield, which consists of some of the most exciting players in the USMNT pool but need to work on possession and creativity inside the attacking third? Or, is it the forwards, who haven’t mustered much of an attack this year as they try several options up top?

Let us know what unit needs the most improvement or upgrades, and tell us why. It could be due to the players in that group, a tweak of the formations or playing combinations, or a combination of many things that would help that particular part of the USMNT lineup play better. Fill out the poll and then hit the comments to let us know where the USMNT could use the most improvement. Ultimately, most would agree that every unit needs some sort of change or even overhaul, but which one’s improvement would contribute to a quicker turnaround for the national team? You be the judge.
