The United States Men’s and Women’s National Teams play a lot of matches in a particular year. Most of them happen to be at home, as the federation prefers to make money by securing opponents for the teams to play in familiar locations around the country. Still, the allure of playing on the road is something that many diehards of both the USMNT and USWNT desire more than another match in a familiar home location.
Playing on the road, for the team, is a chance for them to get out of their comfort zone, playing an opponent at a site that benefits them and not the United States. They get to see how tough it can be to play on grass that isn’t perfect, in old, noisy stadiums, staying in hotels surrounded by opposing fans who try to keep them up all night, with the gamesmanship of tighter locker rooms with fewer amenities than they are used to. For the fans, it’s a chance to travel to another country, mix with the locals, and walk into a stadium knowing they’re outnumbered and have to bring the noise to support their team.
Today’s Community Corner is one where we want to hear from fans: who would you like to see the USMNT or USWNT play on the road? It could be a team that plays in a city or stadium you’ve always wanted to visit, or it could be a team or venue that you know will help test the quality of our team and give them a shakeup from the norm. Hit the comments and let us know where you’d like to see the USMNT or USWNT take their show on the road.
