Last weekend, the 2020 USL Championship season began, and there was a lot of action among the 35 teams in the league. From Louisville City to Las Vegas Lights, San Diego Loyal to Charlotte Independence, the 2nd division of soccer in the United States is poised for its biggest year yet.

Of the 35 teams, 9 teams are MLS II clubs, and 4 are independent clubs affiliated with a MLS team. The rest are independent clubs trying to build on their fanbases and soccer communities.

From USL may come the next stars on the United States Men’s National Team. It’s quite common for players like Tyler Adams, Ulysses Llanez, Julian Araujo, and Miles Robinson to get their start in USL (usually through their MLS team’s reserve team) on their way to featuring in MLS or perhaps, in the case of Adams and Llanez, eventually moving to budding careers in Europe. For those who are excited about the future of the USMNT, that future is present in the USL Championship as tomorrow’s stars compete today.

The Community Corner question this week: is the USL Championship on your radar? Are there players who you are looking out for this year? Do you have a team? Hit the comments and let’s discuss the USL Championship!
