Who from the Gold Cup roster should be called in for World Cup qualifying?

The United States Men’s National Team won their 2nd continental title in the span of a couple months, winning the Gold Cup on Sunday night against Mexico with a 1-0 extra time victory. Their archrivals were also the opponent in the Concacaf Nations League Final, which also ended with an American victory after extra time, 3-2 being the final score.

Head coach Gregg Berhalter steered two separate rosters to those titles, opting to bring his A lineup to the Nations League and go through the Gold Cup with players that he thought could rise to the occasion. They certainly did, beating that Mexico team that had essentially the same roster for both competitions. That gives the USMNT a boost of confidence as they begin World Cup qualifying in less than a month.

One goal that Berhalter had for the Gold Cup was to identify players that could possibly help with depth when World Cup qualifying comes around. With 4 of the 5 windows containing 3 matches in the span of 7 days, the USMNT will need more than the 23 best players to endure the lengthy journey to the World Cup. Berhalter has indicated that he would consider bringing in an expanded roster for the qualifying windows so that his best players can rotate and be able to stay fresh not just for qualifying, but for their clubs as well.

So, take a look at the players that were on the roster at some point for the Gold Cup:

GOALKEEPERS (3): Brad Guzan (Atlanta United), Sean Johnson (New York City FC), Matt Turner (New England Revolution)

DEFENDERS (9): George Bello (Atlanta United), Reggie Cannon (Boavista), Henry Kessler (New England Revolution)*, Shaq Moore (Tenerife), Donovan Pines (D.C. United), Miles Robinson (Atlanta United), James Sands (New York City FC), Sam Vines (Colorado Rapids), Walker Zimmerman (Nashville SC)**

MIDFIELDERS (6): Kellyn Acosta (Colorado Rapids), Gianluca Busio (Sporting Kansas City), Sebastian Lletget (LA Galaxy), Cristian Roldan (Seattle Sounders), Eryk Williamson (Portland Timbers), Jackson Yueill (San Jose Earthquakes)

FORWARDS (6): Paul Arriola (D.C. United), Daryl Dike (Orlando City), Nicholas Gioacchini (Caen), Matthew Hoppe (Schalke), Jonathan Lewis (Colorado Rapids), Gyasi Zardes (Columbus Crew)

*Henry Kessler was an injury replacement for Walker Zimmerman for the knockout stage
**Walker Zimmerman left the team due to injury after the group stage
