American Desevio Payne will be free to leave Eredivisie club Groningen this summer according to reports. Dutch soccer reporter Elwin Baas reports that the 21-year-old full-back will not have his contract at the club extended.

Payne has appeared 17 total times in the Dutch first division, scoring one goal. He’ll be best known by U.S. Soccer fans for being an important part of the USMNT U-20 team that advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2015 World Cup. His technical ability and defensive presence at right back was a revelation in that tournament and helped them advance as far as they did.
It’s unclear why he’s not been given more of a chance with Groningen or why they don’t see him as an option for the future. It’ll be interesting to see where he lands when he’s free to sign with any club he wants. Perhaps he’ll join the stable of Yanks in the 2. Bundesliga? Or maybe even jump across the pond to MLS? Where would you like him to end up?
