American soccer fans received a bit of Christmas news this morning, as reports are swirling that Tim Weah could head to Celtic FC on loan from Paris Saint-Germain when the transfer window opens on January 1st. Weah confirmed his departure from the Parc des Princes via his Instagram account, where he also began following several of his potential Celtic teammates.

Loosely translated, this is what Timothy Weah is saying:

I just want to take the time to talk to everyone about the decision that my family and I have taken with regard to leaving on loan this winter. First of all, I would like to thank the supporters for their constant support, as well as the coaching staff and my teammates, for strengthening me in my mind and for me to always feel a part of this family. These few months have been great even though I haven’t played much, I’ve always been grateful for the opportunities I had at the beginning of the season because it opened me many doors this winter.. my teammates I love you and I know you’ll go all the way and take the Cup this year, God is with you all. For you fans “the ultras also of course” I will miss the stadium, as well as the energy you bring to each game. I love you and God bless you. I hope after these six months, I will be ready to return to the Parc des Princes and give everything for you <3 <3 proud to be Parisian <3 <3………

The 18-year-old winger/striker has struggled for playing time with PSG this season, appearing in the first two matches of the Ligue 1 season, with one start, and scoring a goal in the season opener. He also started and scored a goal for PSG against AS Monaco in the Trophée des Champions (French Super Cup) in August.

So far in the fall, Weah’s playing has come mostly as a part of the United States Men’s National Team, appearing in every match for the USMNT this fall except the final one of the year against Italy. He notched an assist and showed a lot of quality that excites American fans for his potential in Europe.

Still, PSG was not giving him the opportunities to play regularly as he was, at minimum, behind the powerful front lineup of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, and Edinson Cavani on the depth chart. He has long mentioned that he wished to go out on loan to find a place where he could get regular playing time and improve, and it looks like he will get that by going to The Bhoys. The Scottish Premier League has taken several steps down in quality over the past few years, but the rugged style of play will allow Weah to get ample preparation for what matches against CONCACAF opponents can be like.

Celtic is currently in the Round of 32 in UEFA Europa League, with a two-legged tie against Valencia in February. They also sit in first place in the SPL, just one point ahead of archrivals Rangers FC and 3 points ahead of Aberdeen FC. With several of Celtic’s attacking players injured, it seems that Weah should get plenty of chances to play either at striker or on one of the wings with his pace and creativity. This may not be the absolute best spot for Weah to land on loan, but it seems that he is approaching this rumored move with a positive attitude, and that can only mean great things about his development.

What are your thoughts on Tim Weah possibly headed to Celtic?
