Despite the sporting world having ground to a halt, clubs are looking ahead to the upcoming transfer window. Sergiño Dest will likely be the subject of a bidding war, as some of the world’s top clubs are reportedly interested in signing him.

The American fullback was previously linked with previously linked with a move to Bayern Munich. According to De Telegraaf, the Bavarians had a €20 million offer rejected, with Ajax valuing the player at €30 million. Reportedly, the clubs could agree on a transfer fee of €26 million. Dest was seen at the Allianz Arena in March, but he informed the media that it was a personal visit.

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge recently said the club’s “transfer activities are currently on hold,” but they are reportedly still the front-runner and “already had intensive discussions with the defender.” However, according to Florian Poenitz for Sky Sports, the reigning Bundesliga champions might have competition from Barcelona. And if those two clubs are interested in a player, it’s safe to assume that almost every other one in the world would be as well.

It would be an unprecedented move for a member of the U.S. national team to join Barcelona. The La Liga giant has taken on somewhat of a mythical status among American media and fandom, with a hypothetical player at the club being viewed as a significant benchmark. There have been a few Americans at La Masia (including current Barcelona B/Juvenil A player Konrad de la Fuente) and some linked with rumored transfers that never came to pass (Fabian Johnson, John O’Brien). While continuing to develop at Ajax (his contract lasts through summer of 2022) or a move to the Bundesliga appears more likely for Dest, fans can enjoy this rumor and dream of him connecting with Lionel Messi at Camp Nou.

It’s been a rapid rise for the 19-year-old defender, who debuted for Ajax this season and quickly became a regular in the starting lineup. Dest has made three appearances for the United States Men’s National Team since committing his international future in September of 2019. He received attention from the Netherlands but opted to not switch.

Should Dest move to Bayern Munich? Would you prefer to see him at Barcelona? Does he need another season at Ajax?
