United States U-23 head coach Andi Herzog has named a 19-man roster for the Toulon Tournament in France. It's a very familiar list to anyone who has been following this age group since 2013, however it does one big addition in Julian Green.
Green was initially supposed to called in for the U-23's friendly with Mexico in April, but was not released in time by his club Hamburg. The 19-year-old German-American has had a rough 2014-15, spending most of the season with Hamburg's reserve team. He will finally get a chance to play for the U-23's and stake his claim for a Olympic qualifying roster spot.
A couple of notable absences from the roster include DeAndre Yedlin and John Anthony Brooks. It appears both are in Klinsmann's plans for the full national team this summer so they will be unavailable for the U-23 team, but except them to make an appearance for qualifying in October. Wil Trapp is another notable absence, but, unfortunately, he misses out while still recovering from a concussion he suffered in March.
Along with Green, the biggest name bound for France is Stanford University forward Jordan Morris. Morris has enjoyed a Cinderella-like beginning to his 2015, scoring against Mexico's senior and U-23 team in April. He will look to continue his rise up the USMNT depth chart with a strong performance against what is sure to be stiff competition.
The USA will be in a five team group consisting of host country France, the Netherlands, Qatar, and Costa Rica. Their first match is against France on Wednesday May 27 at 1 p.m. ET. Two days later they will take on the Netherlands. Group play will conclude with games against Costa Rica on May 31 and Qatar on June 2. All USA group games can be seen live on beIN Sports.
