MLS: U.S. Open Cup-Christos FC at D.C. United Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

In true U.S. Soccer fashion, the United States under-17’s laid a big ol’ bald eagle egg when needing just a draw to win their World Cup group. Instead, they fell to Colombia and fell all the way to third in their group and have been matched up against Paraguay in the Round of 16.

The Paraguayans won their group, going a perfect 3-0 with 10 goals scored and five conceded. So, yeah, the U.S. have made it extremely difficult for themselves with that egg they laid.

Is this the end of the run for this talented team or will they rise to the occasion and keep their tournament alive? Josh Sargent has a penalty conversion in this tournament, but isn’t really proving to be a Bundesliga-caliber prospect in this tournament like he did the U-20 World Cup. This will be the match the U.S. needs his talent to shine through in terms of production.

Hopefully we get to see a couple of more games. If this is the end of the tournament, it will feel like a complete disappointment overall for this crop of players.
