The United States under-20 men’s national team kick off the 2017 CONCACAF U-20 Championship today with a match against Panama. This tournament doubles as the region’s World Cup qualifying process with four spots to this summer’s event on the line.
Tab Ramos’ side hasn’t been talked about or hyped up as much as previous year’s crops, but they are talented and should have a good chance at qualification thanks to the tournament’s new format. After a normal group stage, the top two finishers in each group will advance to a three-team group. There, the top two finishers will earn a spot in the U-20 World Cup.
Ramos has already indicated that Jurgen Klinsmann’s son Jonathan be the starter in goal for his side heading into the tournament. He’s also named Erik Palmer-Brown his captain. Other than that, the rest of the important decisions will be made ahead of the first match. He did say that Panama were the best team of the 2015 tournament and that this would be almost like a final in and of itself. It should be a good match.
USA Lineup: Klinsmann; Fossey, Redding, Glad, Acosta; Adams, Palmer-Brown, de la Torre; Saucedo, Ebobisse, Lennon
