Many have admitted that this current U-20 team is a weird group on paper. Nearly all of the U-17 team that showed so much promise two years ago are not available due to club commitments. But still, I don’t think anyone expected to see as dismal of a performance as we saw in the opening match against Panama. After the opponent received a red card early in the match, that seemed to do nothing for the young Americans as they still looked outmatched for long portions of the match.
They now have two matches to get their World Cup qualifying chances back on track. There was no doubt that Panama would be the toughest match of the group stage, but now the pressure is squarely on Tab Ramos and his side’s shoulders. Anything less than four points from the next two will likely see them sent home. Hope is not lost, but if they cannot improve in the attack and start creating some chances it could be the end of the line for this group of players.
Haiti destroyed St. Kitts and Nevis, 5-1, in their opening match giving them a big goal differential. The U.S. would keep their hopes alive with a draw, but would have a lot of work to do in the final match. Ideally a win over Haiti would be just the prescription for the first match disappointment for this side.
