The United States will head to Brazil in December for the International Tournament of Brasilia. The competition will serve as Women's World Cup prep and will see them play Brazil, China and Argentina at the National Stadium Mane Garrincha between December 10 and December 21.
The competition will open on December 10, with the U.S. taking on China. They will play Brazil on December 14 and Argentina three days later, with the top two teams in the group squaring off for the tournament title on December 21.
Brazil is easily the toughest competition for the U.S. in the tournament. They, like China, have already qualified for the Women's World Cup. Argentina finished fourth in CONMEBOL qualifying, one place out of the playoff spot, and will not be going to Canada next summer.
The U.S. will begin the CONCACAF Women's Championship this month, which serves as qualifying for the World Cup. The Americans are heavy favorites to qualify and should be among the favorites come next year. Now they have a December tournament to help them prepare for it, something that should serve them well.
Normally, the U.S. holds a December training camp, but that will be replaced by this tournament. Jill Ellis took over the team this year after the firing of Tom Sermanni and has struggled to get the best out of the team, as Sermanni did before her. With the World Cup just around the corner, the U.S. needs to start improving and a fairly high level competition at the end of the year will be a great opportunity for them to do just that.
