The 2020 season for the NWSL, the 8th for the league, will begin in April with lots of expectations. The league gained a ton of popularity last summer and fall, a residual effect from the United States Women’s National Team claiming its 2nd straight (and 4th overall) Women’s World Cup last summer in France. Now, the league will hope to build on that popularity to continue to draw record crowds and prove it is the best women’s soccer league in the world.
The Chicago Red Stars, Houston Dash, North Carolina Courage, Orlando Pride, Portland Thorns FC, Reign FC, Sky Blue FC, Utah Royals FC, and the Washington Spirit will enter the season with the hope of lifting the NWSL trophy as the champions of the league. Even with some of the league’s stars departing in July to compete in the Olympics, teams are pumping more resources into their product to keep the fans they gained last year. Louisville, who has an expansion team coming in 2021, will hope to begin building that foundation this year before they join the league.
