The United States Women’s National Team enter the international window next week for two matches against China, and some newcomers will be entering the mix. Today, U.S. Soccer announced the 26-player roster for those two friendlies.
The USWNT will face China in friendlies on December 2nd at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale and December 5th at Toyota Stadium in Frisco. The roster includes Jenna Nighswonger, who won 2023 NWSL Rookie of the Year, and Korbin Albert, who each will be attending their first USWNT camp. Interim coach Twila Kilgore will lead the squad against China, and she chose the roster as part of the overall strategy from U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker and newly hired USWNT head coach Emma Hayes, who will continue to coach Chelsea FC Women until the end of the WSL season.
“As we move forward with the next steps, we need more opportunities to see players from our pool in our unique National Team environment, in both training and games, so we can evaluate if and how they might contribute moving forward to the Olympics,” Kilgore said in a statement. “We value these players who have recently been in camps or played in World Cup and were not chosen for this roster, and they are of course still a part of our pool, but we know what they bring on and off the field. At the same time, we also need to continue to evaluate and bring along players in the right ways to give the team the best chance for success.”
