Today begins the final matchdays of the group stage for each team. Some teams have already booked their place into the knockout stage, while others need wins and help from other teams in the group. Today, Group A and Group B will have their final matches, and since it’s the 3rd match, the entire group will play simultaneously to avoid any funny business.
In the morning, Group A kicks us off as Uruguay faces hosts Russia and Saudi Arabia takes on Egypt. The match to watch here is Uruguay-Russia. Both teams have already qualified for the next round, but Uruguay needs to win this match will win the group. Russia has a +5 goal differential advantage on Uruguay, so they only need a draw to advance as the Group A winners. Saudi Arabia and Egypt will be playing for pride as both will be departing the World Cup after this match.
In the afternoon, it’s Group B’s turn, with Iran hosting Portugal and Spain matching up with Morocco. Portugal and Spain both sit atop the group with 4 points, with Iran only 1 point behind. If Portugal and Spain are also tied in goal differential, goals scored and goals against, so it presents an incredible scenario. If they both win by the same scoreline, fair play rules (yellow cards and red cards) could determine who wins the group and who is in 2nd. If both lose by the same scoreline, then Iran will will Group B, and fair play rules could determine which of Portugal and Spain is 2nd and which one returns to the Iberian Peninsula.
