It’s the second day of the 2018 World Cup Round of 16, and two more teams will try to join France and Uruguay in the quarterfinals. For the other two teams, it’s a long trip home (or possibly a short trip home) with the wonder of what could have been. First, Group B winners Spain will take on Group A runners-up and hosts Russia. Russia has scored a bushel of goals so far in this tournament, and they are back in Moscow, where they crushed Saudi Arabia in the World Cup opener. They’re going to need these goals against Diego Costa, Isco, and Spain, who struggled a bit in winning Group B but have the firepower to end Russia’s run very quickly.
After that, Croatia faces off against Denmark. Croatia has been one of the best teams in the tournament so far, storming through Group C with ease. Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic have been sensational, and Croatia will hope they keep that up. Denmark was the runners-up in Group D, and they have the determination to put a bit of a shock in the remaining field. Christian Eriksen has the star quality to take over a match, but can he do it for the Danes and send them to the quarterfinals?
